How it all began
I began my career as a New York City Paramedic followed by a career as an Emergency Cardiac Care Instructor at New York Cornell and Columbia Hospitals and Medical Schools. Now known as NY Presbyterian. From my first heart attack patient to treating patients with diabetic emergencies, I was intrigued by what leads to poor functioning health, and how one can direct themselves out of it. Even more importantly, how one can prevent bad health from occurring.
I spent endless hours in my hospital’s medical libraries, attended health conferences, and had many conversations with colleagues on health, fitness, and nutrition. But what started my journey to health and wellness, were the many “older” patients I took care of on the ambulance, who only called 911 for non-life-threatening injuries, and health emergencies like an upset stomach or a fractured ankle. But were otherwise healthy and portrayed good-looking physiques.
These older patients ranging in age from 70 to 90 years of age, were fit as a fiddle. I encountered hundreds of these “healthy” patients as a Paramedic. And they all had three to four life principles in common to achieving good health. They all committed to an overall healthy, daily low-caloric diet and exercised regularly using their body weight or with some form of resistance training. Daily walking regimens were included along with a sense of purpose and self-worth, which energetically propelled them to get out of bed, every morning. Many of these older people also had strong desires in serving others, while being anchored in a belief of a Creator.
These remarkably older people didn’t just volunteer in food pantries or in hospitals, to satisfy their sense of purpose. But made themselves available to family members. By offering their time to babysit grandchildren, attend their school functions, and school plays, or volunteer as school chaperones. They also spent time with friends and family members who lived alone and had no one to have simple conversations with. Social connections and relationships are extremely vital in aiding in an overall well-balanced healthy lifestyle.
